Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Purpose of the Network Map?

The Case Foundation, in partnership with ImpactSpace and Crunchbase, is developing the Impact Investing Network Map to show the connections between investors, companies and funds within impact investing. We believe bringing the connections between investors and companies to life will foster a better understanding of the size, breadth and depth of impact investing.

Our efforts for the Beta version of the Network Map focus on three primary objectives:

  • Begin to test the tool and explore its functionality
  • Create a forum to spotlight the value – and challenges – of publicly available data
  • Encourage you – the user – to join and submit your data to help grow the utility of this tool

What is impact investing?

Impact investing is investments made into companies, organizations and funds with the intention to generate positive social and environmental outcomes alongside a financial return. – The Global Impact Investing Network (Source: GIIN)

The precise elements of each organization’s definition can differ. At the Case Foundation, we believe Impact Investing requires three necessary conditions, in addition to our belief in double bottom line returns:

  • Intentionality: Clearly articulated objectives at the outset, pertaining to both social and financial objectives
  • Measurement: A tangible commitment to track performance across social and financial metrics
  • Transparency: A belief in information-sharing and insight into decision making, particularly as it relates to reporting out against expectations

What is a social enterprise?

A social enterprise is an organization or initiative that marries the social mission of a non-profit or government program with the market-driven approach of a business. (Source: Social Enterprise Alliance)
